SALVATION ARMY TO HOST 2nd ANNUAL RED KETTLE RUN THROUGH BOSTON
Teams of three set to take kettles on the move through the streets of Boston to raise money for those in need as economy leaves many underemployed
BOSTON, MA (November 6, 2014) — The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Run will return for a second year to kick off the 2014 holiday season and efforts to raise funds to support seniors, families and children in need across the Commonwealth.
Registration is underway for local businesses, organizations and individuals who would like to participate in the Red Kettle Run, set for Wednesday, November 19. During the Run, teams of three individuals will take Red Kettles on the move through the streets of Boston to raise funds for those in need. Donations will contribute to this year’s statewide Red Kettle campaign goal of $3.36 million to support individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth.
“We’re proud to bring back the Red Kettle Run for a second year to help individuals and families in need throughout the Commonwealth,” said Major Ivan Rock, General Secretary of the Massachusetts Salvation Army. “The Red Kettles are a hallmark of the holiday season and we’re looking forward to putting them on the move to jump-start a holiday season of giving.”
The Red Kettle Run will start at 8:30 by the Brewer Fountain at Park Street Station near the corner of Park and Tremont Streets. Three-person teams will run through downtown Boston carrying a red kettle to solicit as many donations as possible in an hour. The Salvation Army will register teams and is asking businesses and organizations to participate.
While the unemployment rate has improved, record numbers of adults have stopped looking for work or have settled for lower-paying jobs. The money raised during the Red Kettle Campaign is a critical source of funding for vital programs and services for hundreds of thousands of children, families and seniors across Massachusetts each year. This includes meals, toys and other holiday support for those in need, along with funding for food pantries, soup kitchens, social services, and education programs throughout the year.
“Our economy is improving, but many families across Massachusetts are continuing to struggle this holiday season,” Major Rock said. “Even in families where one adult is working, many parents have trouble providing food for their families, gifts for their children, and heat for their homes. The money raised from the Massachusetts Kettle Campaign is a vital source of funding for programs and services to help families in need during all the holiday season and all year round.”
The Red Kettle tradition began in 1891 when Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee wanted to help feed needy citizens in San Francisco. McFee remembered the ferry landings in Liverpool England, where people would sit with small kettles that travelers would toss spare change into to help the less fortunate. Placing his own kettle on Market Street in Oakland California, McFee was able to help individuals on Christmas. The idea traveled to Boston in 1897 and the Red Kettle Campaign has been a tradition ever since.
