Lawrence food pantries running short on supplies

WAL_Food Pantry_empty shelvesIn Lawrence, where 1 in 8 adults is unemployed and actively looking for work, local food pantries are scrambling to keep pace with requests for aid.

Facing a food shortage, the Salvation Army food pantry has had to cut down on the amount of food given to families in need and, in some cases, turn away families altogether.

“We are committed to helping everyone in need, but right now we can’t keep up with requests for assistance,” said Miguelina Feliz, who runs the Lawrence Salvation Army with her husband, Eduardo. “In some cases, families come in looking for food and we are unable to give them anything because the pantry shelves are empty.”
